TSUNEISHI Group jointly exhibited at SMART ENERGY WEEK ‘H2 & FC EXPO’ -Towards Carbon Neutrality in the Maritime Industry-

From 19 to 21 February 2025, JPN H₂YDRO, TSUNEISHI FACILITIES&CRAFT, KAMBARA KISEN and TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING as TSUNEISHI Group, participated in a joint exhibition at the H2&FC EXPO Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Exhibition held as part of SMART ENERGY WEEK at Tokyo Big Sight. The following is a report details the exhibition and the efforts made towards carbon neutrality in the maritime industry.

■ Overview of the exhibition
The exhibition showcased technologies for the social implementation of hydrogen, the key to achieving carbon neutrality, which is an initiative of the TSUNEISHI Group. The presentation highlighted the use of hydrogen fuel in the port sector, focusing on a tugboat equipped with a hydrogen powered internal combustion engine (under construction by TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING) and an offshore hydrogen station (to be built by TSUNEISHI FACILITIES&CRAFT) under development at JPN H₂YDRO. We exhibited a 1/50 scale model of a hydrogen powered internal combustion engine tugboat and offshore hydrogen station, as well as a video of a hydrogen powered internal combustion engine tugboat under construction.

■ On the day of the exhibition
Over the 3 days of the exhibition, the booth attracted more than 300 visitors, mainly from the maritime industry and the hydrogen business. Visitors to the exhibition expressed interest in a range of topics related to hydrogen technology, including the mechanisms of internal combustion for dual and mono- fuel, hydrogen charging at sea, prospects for zero-emission ships and the reasons why not fuel cells. Many people also stopped in front of the panel for the Hydrogen Powered Internal Combustion Engine R&D Centre, where they were interested in the research facilities for hydrogen powered internal combustion engines and the flow of hydrogen stations for vessels.

■ Prospects for the future
TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING will deliver a tugboat with a hydrogen mono-fuel internal combustion engine in 2025. In addition, TSUNEISHI Group plans to complete construction of an offshore hydrogen station in 2025 and to develop and demonstrate a zero-emission ship equipped with a Hydrogen mono-fuel internal combustion engine by 2026. We will develop and apply hydrogen dual/mono-fuel technologies, taking into account the status and needs of the hydrogen infrastructure in society as a whole, and propose optimal hydrogen fuel solutions that are both economical and safe, and contribute to the proliferation of zero-emission vessels.
