Akishima Laboratory Accepts Local Junior High School Students for Work Experience – Experience Research in the Fields of Shipping and Maritime-
March 5, 2025
Akishima Laboratory conducted a three-day work experience programme from 5 to 7 February for students from the local Akishima Municipal ZUIUN Junior High School. These work experiences from part of our regional contribution activities, with the aim of providing students with an opportunity to consider their future career options in the attractive field of the Japanese maritime industries.
The Akishima Laboratory is a leading research institution specialising in maritime and oceanic studies. With the full use of various techniques, such as testing and measuring techniques, simulation calculations, and control technologies, the laboratory has conducted a wide range of business from engineering to product development. In addition, we are contributing to the development of new industries and the economic growth of the region.
The three-day work experience programme commenced with an explanation of hull form development, followed by an opportunity to observe research into floating a large model ship in a substantial water tank for ship performance tests. The students gained hand-on experience attaching tufts* to a ship model, observed a visualisation test to observe the flow of water and air around the ship model, and watched CFD calculations using a computer. On the final day, students gave a presentation on their experiences. Participating students commented that they gained hands-on experience in ship product development and found the workplace environment conductive to learning.
Akishima Laboratory continues to promote the attractiveness of the maritime industries and contribute to the local community through work experiences and other activities.
