Basic Agreement on Long-term charter signed for the Methanol Dual Fuel Bulk Carrier TESS66 AEROLINE

September 20, 2023

The TSUNEISHI GROUP aims to establish a long-term business foundation that is environmentally friendly and contributes to a society that is sustainable. Accordingly, we are pleased to announce that our group company, KAMBARA KISEN Co., Ltd. (HQ: Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Japan; Representative Director and President: Hirotatsu Kambara), has signed a Basic Agreement for long-term fixed-period charter on September 11, 2023 for the Methanol Dual Fuel Bulk Carrier TESS66 AEROLINE (“TESS66”) with MOL Drybulk Ltd. (HQ: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President and Representative Director: Kazuhiko Kikuchi), which is a group company of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (HQ: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto). With the aim of reducing CO2 for marine transport, TESS66 is fueled by green methanol, which is recently capturing attention around the world. Our group company, TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Co., Ltd., has received the order to build this ship and expects to complete construction in 2027.

TESS66 will be equipped with a dual-fuel combustion main engine that can run on methanol fuel or heavy oil as a backup fuel. The vessel is expected to primarily use e-methanol, which is produced by synthesizing recovered CO2 and hydrogen manufactured using renewable energy sources, as well as bio-methanol derived from biogas. By using methanol derived from these non-fossil raw materials, we will substantially decrease GHG emissions*1 compared to conventional similar-size vessels that are fueled by heavy oil. Each TESS66 is fitted with a methanol tank with the capacity to accommodate its particular route, using a design that secures the required cruising distance while maximizing cargo space.

The TSUNEISHI GROUP slogan is “Creating the future, today.” True to this, we will continue to accelerate initiatives for next-generation fuel ships, providing customers with zero-emission ships and services that combine environmental performance with economy to contribute to reducing the impact on the environment.

■TSUNEISHI GROUP
The TSUNEISHI GROUP, which started with shipping and shipbuilding, marks its 120th anniversary this year. We have expanded today into a range of businesses that contribute to communities, including energy, environment, and life & resorts. In April 2022, we endorsed the TCFD recommendations, taking this opportunity to align as a group to properly address climate change-related phenomenon as a risk to society and to our business. At the same time, we will create new opportunities that link to a stronger business foundation for sustainable growth and aim to become a corporate group that evolves and develops along with communities.
