TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING’s MT-FAST receives 2018 Minister of the Environment Award for Global Warming Prevention Activity

December 3, 2018

The energy-saving hull fitting MT-FAST jointly developed by TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Co., Ltd. (HQ: 1083 Tsuneishi, Numakuma-cho, Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Japan; President: Kenji Kawano) and MTI Co., Ltd. (HQ: 3-2, Marunouchi 2 Chome, Chiyoda-Ku, Tokyo, Japan; President: Yasuo Tanaka; hereafter: MTI)of the NYK Group received the 2018 Minister of the Environment Award for Global Warming Prevention Activity (Technological Development and Commercialization Category).* The awards ceremony on December 3 was attended by TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING (TS) President Kenji Kawano, NYK Senior Managing Corporate Officer Hidetoshi Maruyama, and MTI President Yasuo Tanaka.

MT-FAST is an energy-saving hull fitting that attaches multiple fins in front of the propeller to collect the lost energy from its rotational flow, significantly reducing fuel use by 3 to 5%. It can be fitted on both newly-built and existing ships and has been installed on over 500 bulk/container carriers and tankers since its development in 2008, resulting in a reduction of approximately 1.34 million tons of CO2 emissions over the past decade. The award was in recognition of this achievement.

The three companies will continue to engage in solving environmental issues with the entire maritime industry by promoting installation of this energy-saving device and by developing new technologies that will contribute to reducing environmental burdens.
