October 15, 2012

Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Company (Headquarters: 1083, Tsuneishi, Numakuma-cho, Fukuyama city, Hiroshima, President Takao Kawamoto) held the Tsuneishi Technical Olympics on October 13th (Sat.) at the Tsuneishi Factory (same address, Factory Director, Masahiro Kawakita). Participants competed at technical skills crucial to shipbuilding such as welding, painting, and transporting.

It was the 12th Olympics this year, and 111 participants including technical employees, subcontracting companies’ employees, and trainees from the Philippines and China competed in 8 categories of technical skills such as welding, gas cutting, and crane operation for transportation. The top 3 participants received gold, silver, and bronze awards. The factory director, Masahiro Kawakita said in his closing speech, “The basis of production is relying on each factory worker’s skill. This competition is a good chance to recognize the importance of skills, and I’d like everyone to improve their skills.” This competition started in 2001, with the aim of raising technical skills needed to build high quality products. In the first year, welding was the only competition category. In the second year, ironwork skills were added, and in the third year painting, outfitting, and transporting were added in accordance with requests from employees, making this a whole-factory undertaking.

The Technical Olympics which started in the Tsuneishi factory were also held at the Tadotsu factory (Tadotsu-cho, Kagawa Prefecture) in 2006 and have been held at Tsuneishi Group (ZHOUSHAN) Shipbuilding Inc. (Zhoushan Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, China) since 2011 and at Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu), Inc. (Cebu, Philippines) since 2012, to increase the level of technical shipbuilding skills in these 4 factories both in Japan and overseas. President Takao Kawamoto said, “We’d like to contribute to making the local shipbuilding industries more active by educating our employees not only in Japan but in the Philippines and China so that they can develop their shipbuilding skills and equalizing their shipbuilding quality.”
