Tsuneishi Completely Changes Wheelhouse Design Base
Feb 18, 2004

Tsuneishi Corporation has refurbished its design criteria for wheelhouses after developing a unique standard wheelhouse layout, and decided to install it in vessels to be built in the future, beginning with our first Kamsarmax Bulker, slated to be launched this year. At Tsuneishi Corporation, to ensure safety during long-distance sailing, such as on ocean routes, the wheelhouse design has been reviewed, focusing on improved operability of route monitoring and ship maneuvering equipment, working environment, as well as overall ease of use. In the review process, a new method of consultation with architectural experts was introduced, in which ergonomic considerations were taken into consideration in the development of a new basis for the design. The main features of the new design include:

(1) Broader field of view via a wider glass pane An extended area of glass has been employed for the bridge's extending front protrusion as well as the bridge's front face and both portholes, minimizing blind spots in the field of view. The result is a field of view that allows even safer navigation.

(2) Better ease of use due to integration of the radar console The ship's maneuvering gear is integrated into the bridge console alongside the radar instruments, realizing improved ease of operability during ship maneuvering.

(3) Use of color to improve the working environment Based on consultations with architectural experts, interior coloring is now included in the design criteria. For flooring and curtains, the color has been unified, with blue as the base color. The coloring of ceilings, walls, and other items has been made slightly darker, producing a feeling of calm that in turn is believed to lessen fatigue. Meanwhile, with regard to important equipment, including the bridge console, radio console, radar instruments, and the nautical instrument panel, the standard machinery-specific grey has been replaced with a bluish color with the aim of to enhancing unity and visibility while promoting mental focus.

(4) Employment of rubber mats to lessen fatigue To create a better working environment in the wheelhouse and lessen fatigue, rubber mats with anti-slip/cushioning effects are employed for the flooring. (For an overall impression, see the perspective drawing of the wheelhouse.)

Tsuneishi decides to install electrically powered deck machinery in the next Handymax model
Sep 24, 2003

Environment-friendly efforts overtake industry competition

In an effort to take the lead in environmental awareness in the shipbuilding industry, Tsuneishi Corporation (head office: 1083 Tsuneishi, Numakuma-cho, Numakuma, Hiroshima, President: Katsushige Kambara) has decided to equip its new Handymax Bulk Carrier TESS 58 with electrically powered deck machinery.

Currently, deck machinery such as anchor windlasses, deck cranes and winches are hydraulically powered, which can lead to high maintenance and running costs and marine pollution. During its development of next-generation vessels, Tsuneishi prioritized environmental care and fuel efficiency and made its decision to introduce electrically powered deck machinery to the new Handymax Bulker TESS 58.

Thanks to this new deck machinery, the TESS 58 has a sharply lower risk of contaminating the ocean with leaked oil, and by cutting the number of components and with it the need for maintenance, features reduced running costs. In addition to these strategies, we have eased the environmental impact of the TESS 58 by installing an additional device at its stern to boost its propulsion efficiency and increased its environmental safety by placing its fuel tanks in the center of the double bottom and giving side-mounted fuel tanks double skins.

The TESS 58, equipped with electrically powered deck machinery, was developed with the aim of upgrading the TESS 52 series. It features even better fuel efficiency and improved deadweight tonnage of 58,200 tonnes, achieved by deepening its draft while maintaining overall length and moulded breadth. The wide range of new features of the TESS 58, which include pumped-cargo capacity and a larger hatch opening, make it the most advanced bulk carrier model of its type.

Tsuneishi Corporation is currently planning to introduce electrically powered deck machinery to all models in its Panamax BC series and Kamsarmax BC series. We are sure that our move will further enhance the reputation of the TESS series as standard bulk carriers.
